Confidence to move on...

Confidence to move on...

Following an assessment it was discovered that Susan had no parental support; at 17 she faced the prospect of living alone and supporting herself. Susan was offered
a place at New Buxton Mills, an accommodation based Project in Buxton where she would work with staff to create a personal support plan.

Susan says “I created my own support plan and I met regularly with staff on an informal and formal basis. My plan included goals to manage living on my own, budgeting, clearing my debt, accessing training and securing long term accommodation.”

Within a short period Susan began to maintain her own property and was soon helping others by ensuring repairs were reported.

Susan then discovered she was pregnant, “Becoming pregnant changed things dramatically but I got lots of support and I was able to talk through my concerns for the future.”

Susan adapted her support plan so she could continue working towards her goals. Susan successfully completed her NVQ in Childcare then moved on to complete Adullam’s Open College Network accredited Tenancy Preparation course, as part of progression towards moving on. If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Susan volunteered in a charity shop on a regular basis!

A model tenant, Susan was encouraged to move on and she successfully bid for a property under the rent deposit guarantee scheme, where she now lives with her boyfriend and baby daughter and continues to manage her family commitments and her tenancy successfully.

In July 2011, Susan joined Adullam’s matt25 programme, a service to help those facing barriers into employment, where her initial training dealt with work expectations; confidence building and basic skills.

Susan commenced the work placement phase of the programme in October 2011 and attended the matt25 Graduation Ceremony in February 2012.

Susan is doing very well and has ambitions of becoming a support worker herself so she can help others in the same way she was helped. matt25 will offer her the opportunity to move from service user to paid employee.

“Adullam gave me a secure place to live, a boost to my confidence and a chance to be involved in service user days, which were great. I am constantly achieving.”

Susan was nominated for an Adullam Moore Award, which recognises achievement amongst service users. Winning the 2011 Excellent Home Management category, Susan was presented with her certificate at a ceremony in October 2011.
