This is my story...

This is my story...

Paul is a former resident of our Amina House project in Liverpool, a 24-hour project providing support to adults suffering with mental health issues. Paul has moved into his own accommodation and has been drug-free for the last 20 years.

Paul was introduced to Adullam by his community nurse after he was released from a mental health hospital having been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“I spent 10 years at Amina House and gained my independence and learned a lot of life skills. I learned to look after myself, cook healthy meals and do all my own shopping. I joined in lots of activities to keep me busy so I would not get fed up, and return to my old ways and use drugs”

In 2009, Paul felt ready to leave supported accommodation and live independently. With the help of his key worker, he secured a property in the Liverpool L8 area.

“I was so made up when my offer on this place was accepted. I had managed to get my own place with my own bathroom and kitchen – the whole place was mine!”

Paul continues to receive floating support from his support worker, Emma, from our Mental Health Support team in Liverpool to help tackle some of his tasks including budgeting, paying bills and access to the correct welfare benefits.

“Emma encourages me to deal with a lot of things such as paying my utility bills, keeping my home and myself secure and fitting into the community around me. Things have changed lots for me and I have gained so much confidence. I have not used any drugs in more than 20 years. I now know I can do things for myself and feel I have something to live for.”
